One Click Away From a Bad Day:
Even the Biggest Companies Face Cybersecurity Challenges
Here in West Michigan, we’re fortunate to be home to some incredible companies. Organizations like Acrisure have grown into internationally recognized businesses while maintaining deep roots in our community.
Recently, security researchers uncovered a vulnerability affecting a vehicle security product sold by Acrisure Protection Group. The issue could allow attackers to unlock, track, or even disable certain vehicles equipped with the affected device until a firmware update was applied. Researchers worked with the company to develop a patch, and customers are now encouraged to update affected systems.
This isn’t a story about pointing fingers.
It’s a reminder of something every business should know:
Cybersecurity isn’t about whether you’re smart enough or large enough to avoid every vulnerability. It’s about recognizing that technology is constantly changing—and so are the threats.
No Business Is Too Small—or Too Large
When many people think about cyberattacks, they imagine criminals only targeting Fortune 500 companies.
Others believe hackers only go after small businesses because they’re easier targets.
The truth is much simpler.
Hackers look for opportunity.
Sometimes that’s a global enterprise.
Sometimes it’s a manufacturer down the road.
Sometimes it’s a nonprofit, a healthcare office, or a family-owned business.
Every organization relies on technology. Every organization has something worth protecting.
Security Is Never “Finished”
One of the biggest misconceptions we encounter is the idea that cybersecurity is something you buy once.
Install a firewall.
Purchase antivirus.
Turn on multi-factor authentication.
Check the box.
Unfortunately, that’s not how security works.
New vulnerabilities are discovered every week. Software vendors release updates. Attackers develop new techniques. Employees adopt new applications. AI changes how attackers—and defenders—operate.
Good cybersecurity is an ongoing process of reviewing, improving, testing, and adapting.
A Fresh Set of Eyes Can Make a Difference
One of the reasons businesses benefit from periodic security reviews is simple:
It’s hard to see your own blind spots.
Even organizations with talented internal IT teams can benefit from another perspective.
Questions worth asking include:
- Are we missing critical security updates?
- Are our Microsoft 365 security settings configured appropriately?
- Is multi-factor authentication protecting every account that should have it?
- Do former employees still have access somewhere?
- Are we monitoring for unusual activity?
- If ransomware hit tomorrow, how quickly could we recover?
Sometimes the review confirms everything looks great.
Sometimes it uncovers a small issue before it becomes a very expensive one.
Either outcome is a win.
